What We Do
At the Fort McKay Métis Nation, we are dedicated to maintaining and enhancing the well-being of our community members through a wide range of services and initiatives.
Alongside preserving our cultural heritage and providing support for housing, education, and social services, we proudly operate a successful business arm called McKay Métis Group.
McKay Métis Group is a social enterprise wholly owned by the Fort McKay Métis Nation whose mission is to use the profits to directly benefit our members, providing access to affordable housing, education, services for elders and youth, economic development, and infrastructure improvements.
Our business group offers specialized services, including road maintenance, snow removal, security, personal protective equipment (PPE), transportation, tree clearing, crane services, and more. By partnering with us, companies not only receive high-quality services but also contribute to the economic and social prosperity of the Fort McKay Métis community.
Through professionalism, safety, and accountability, we ensure that every partnership leads to success – not only for our partners but for our Nation as well.
Get To Know Us
Fort McKay Métis Nation, along with the Fort McKay First Nation, make up the majority of the community of Fort McKay, which is located 60 kilometers north of Fort McMurray.
In 2018, the Fort McKay Métis Nation saw a major milestone when they bought, fee simple, the land on which their community is built. This was historic and an example to many other Métis communities.
In 2020, the Fort McKay Métis Nation was given “credible assertion” status from the province of Alberta – the first Métis community in Alberta to be given the same recognition as a First Nation.

Summer Student Program
The Fort McKay Métis Nation Summer Student Program is designed to empower our youth by providing hands-on work experience and valuable life skills.
Each summer, students from our community join the program, contributing to meaningful projects that benefit the Nation while gaining knowledge and expertise in various fields.
From maintaining community spaces and building garden boxes to assisting with cultural events like Métis Days, our students play a key role in keeping our traditions and community strong.
The program also fosters personal growth, leadership, and teamwork, allowing participants to connect with their heritage, learn from Elders, and engage in workshops that support their future career aspirations.
By combining education, culture, and community service, the Summer Student Program helps shape the next generation of leaders in Fort McKay Métis Nation.
